Paws Off the Pavement: Summertime Safety for Your Furry Friend

Ashley Kosky, June 26, 2025June 26, 2025

Summer days are heating up. With many areas already climbing into the toasty 90s, beating the heat is a top priority for humans and their four-legged best friends. While you reach for that ice-cold beverage or park yourself in front of the AC, don’t forget to keep your pup cool and comfy too.

Did you know that dogs don’t sweat through their skin, making them more susceptible to overheating? Heatstroke can happen within 10-15 minutes when left in a hot car, even with the windows cracked. And forget about outdoor playtime. Overheating can happen even more quickly when chasing a ball through the yard or going on a walk (Hot pavement? Ouch!). Dogs with thick fur and flat faces, or those who are older or carrying a few extra lovable pounds, are even more vulnerable.

Creative ways to keep your pup entertained

So, how do you keep your pup chill, happy and active when the outdoors feels like stepping into an oven? When the temps are sizzlin’, you can:

  • Take your pup on walks in the early morning or in the evening
  • Provide lots of shade, water, fans and tasty frozen treats
  • Let your pup splash and play in a kiddie pool or run through a sprinkler
  • Play fetch or tug in an indoor space, or use brain-busy toys like puzzles or sniff mats
  • Hide treats around the house for your pup to find…the more difficult, the more fun
  • Teach your pup new tricks, like rolling over, the names of their toys or high-fiving

You can also get creative by making an agility course out of items around the house. Couch cushions, hula hoops, chairs and ottomans make an excellent obstacle course.

How to spot heat exhaustion fast

Worried that your fur baby is already overheating? Acting quickly is vital. Move them to a cool area, offer some cool (not cold) water and contact a vet immediately if they have:

  • Diarrhea or are vomiting
  • Uncoordinated movements or are lethargic
  • Bright red or pale gums
  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Collapsed or are having seizures

Always remember: a cool pup is a happy pup. With some planning ahead, your fur baby can have a paw-some, tail-wagging summer. Whether you’re hanging out indoors or jumping in the pool, keeping your pup safe means more fun for both of you!
